My Favourite Movie Sex Scenes

Of all the questions I got sent for my 300th blog post Q&A, one immediately stood out as the thing I was simultaneously most and least looking forward to answering:

Which movie character would you most want to sleep with, and/or is there a particularly hot scene from a movie that you wish you could participate in?

Come on now! So many hot, sexy characters. So many hot, sexy scenes. How on Earth could I be expected to pick just one??

Here’s the thing though. It’s my blog – I don’t have to pick just one! I can shamelessly cheat and rattle off as many as I like. With that in mind, I eventually settled on three combinations of character + scene that do it for me – any more would turn this into a stand-alone blog post [EDIT: this turned into a stand-alone blog post…] – so with apologies to Heath & Jake in the mountain tent, James McAvoy & Keira Knightley in the library, and Scarlett Johansson in pretty much anything, here’s my final list:

1. Rene Russo + the dancing/staircase/sweaty all-night fuck scene in The Thomas Crown Affair

As I think I’ve said before, I saw this movie at the cinema with my first girlfriend. We were 18, but both still super-innocent – we hadn’t even kissed yet – and I remember sitting there flushed and squirmy as Rene Russo sashayed back onto Pierce Brosnan’s hands, tossing her hair and making sure he had a perfect view of her perfect arse through her sheer black dress.

Everything about it just works. Russo is a hunter; she rocks up to the party without an invitation, and cuts in on the dance Brosnan is sharing with a much younger woman, because she can. He doesn’t give an inch though – after all he’s a hunter too, an alpha dog – and as the music changes, as the horns start to blare out a Latin beat, you know for a fact that this is going to end in the kind of fuck that just unravels you from the inside out.

The subsequent sex scene is less than two minutes long, but again the whole thing is note-perfect, from the music, to the exhausted, hungry look in Brosnan’s eye as she casually pours rum down over his face (“You don’t think we’re finished, do you?” Unf. No, ma’am.), to the way she laughs in delight as their bodies tumble off the desk together at the end of it.

My girlfriend and I had our first kiss in the car park after the movie. Frankly, how could we not?

2. Maribel Verdu + the threesome scene in Y Tu Mama Tambien

Verdu’s character is dying of cancer and reeling from her husband’s infidelity when she accepts Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal’s invitation to road trip with them to a legendary beach, Boca del Cielo. They’re young, boisterous, and desperate to impress; she’s older, cool, challenging, and just the right amount of bitter to cut through their puppyish, peacocking playfulness.

She fucks both boys during the trip, but it’s awkward and just a bit uncomfortable to watch; everything feels very fragile, from her swirling emotions to the love and trust that binds together these two childhood friends, and in each case the sex itself is over almost before it begins. Later, Bernal and Luna fight, Verdu threatens to leave, and by the time they arrive at the beach there is nothing between them but strained silence.

It’s only when they start drinking that the storm properly breaks. All three characters confess their various indiscretions, and at the end of the evening Verdu leads the boys back to their room.

She’s in control of herself again – and very much in charge – even when they start to remove her clothes and sandwich her body between theirs. There’s no background music, just Verdu’s gasps and groans as their hands and mouths move over her body; she writhes against them both in turn, then sinks to her knees to suck their cocks, looking up in time to see them frantically kissing each other above her.

Y Tu Mama Tambien is another movie I saw before I’d actually had sex, and I was almost overwhelmed by how hot it was. Maribel Verdu is the one who holds the whole thing together; she supplies the achingly erotic charge that powers the dynamic between the three characters, and she engineers the final threesome, which is just one of the sexiest things ever.

3. Sarah Michelle Gellar + the massage scene in Cruel Intentions

I was a huge Buffy fan, so Cruel Intentions blew my mind on just about every single level. When Sarah Michelle Gellar props herself up on the bed and tells Ryan Philippe that he can “put it anywhere” a whole generation of adolescent boys pretty much spunked on the spot.

However, it’s a later scene I come back to now, and which really pushes my buttons. As Sebastian updates Kathryn on his progress with Cecile, she leans back into his body and invites him to massage her shoulders. His hands move over her body – her arms, tits, stomach – and hers? Well, we don’t see her hands, but from the way he squeezes his eyes shut and fights for breath, we know exactly where they are and what they’re doing.

When she’s got the information she wanted, Kathryn just gets up and walks off (“Down boy”), leaving Sebastian a seething ball of frustration and arousal. Her preternatural self-control terrified me as a teenager, but these days it’s the kind of tease that would have me hooked. So hot.
