February 18th: Scar

Can you see it? The pale line that starts at the top of my arse crack and curves up to the right, finishing three inches higher (give or take) somewhere near the base of my spine. Maybe you can, maybe you can’t. Maybe you’ve never noticed the fact that my buttocks don’t quite line up symmetrically – and why would you? It’s little thing, really. A kink in the line that runs from top to tail – nothing more, nothing less.

But I know it’s there. I knew it was there in this photo, and these photos, and…well, pretty much every photo I’ve ever posted of my butt. That’s fine though. I no longer regard it as a blemish or an imperfection – no, at worst it’s a quirk. A physical idiosyncrasy. A fun story to share – “oh, did I tell you about the time I had an operation and had to take four weeks off work just as the 2006 World Cup was starting? Right before Wimbledon? And how I couldn’t sit down, so had to stretch out on the sofa while people brought me food? Yeah, it was pretty awesome.”

Of course it wasn’t awesome. Not really. It was a minor op, but it was still scary and a bit painful afterwards. Embarrassing. Dull too – I’m not a good patient. I just don’t like showing it.

The scar? Well, as this blog has made clear over the last four years…I’m fine with showing that.
