February 23rd: Spreadeagle

It’s the last Throwback Thursday of this month-long photo project, and to mark that I’ve dug out one of my favourite photos from the four years I’ve been blogging. It was taken at the request of a good friend (and creative genius), back when I was coming to the end of my notice period in Warsaw. To take it, I snuck into the office late at night, with only the faint noise of the cleaner’s hoover for company, and set up camp in the president’s spacious, stylish office.

The rest was pretty straightforward – and a lot of fun. I left 15 minutes later on a bit of a high, buzzing with adrenaline and incredibly horny. I think as much as anything else, I was turned on by just how filthy and seedy it felt, and with this edit I’ve tried to capture just a little bit of that mood. Let me know what you think…

February 19th: Mapplethorpe

At some point in the last year or so, Exposing 40 introduced me to the erotic photography of Robert Mapplethorpe – and I can’t thank her enough for doing so. His male nudes are authentic, erotic, occasionally crude, often explicit, and (almost) always just really fucking hot. They depict the male body as I wish more people would see it; as something beautiful in its own right, whether in repose or during a more overtly sexual moment.

Anyway, I’ve lusted after a handful of Mapplethorpe’s portraits for a while now – both in a traditional sense and as something to emulate, if possible. I recently tried to recreate the rather impressive photo posted to the right (or above, if you’re reading this on a mobile!) as a phone camera selfie, with spectacularly unsuccessful results, so when Exposing 40 suggested shooting for a different one this afternoon, I didn’t need any persuading.

You’ll find the original image (titled ‘Light Gallery Invitation’)  underneath our attempt – decide for yourself whether we did a decent job!

February 12th: Curves

While unpacking a box of books last night, I rediscovered ‘Butt Number 5’, the photography book(let) by Luke Austin that I picked up in New York 16 months ago. I’ve already posted a couple of photos inspired by Austin’s work, and as I flicked through it this morning I was struck again by just how many different, interesting, sexy poses he managed to capture.

For today’s post, I deliberately picked out a photo that I couldn’t replicate on my own – Liv was keen to help, and I was interested to see how easy it would be for her to figure out the angles, body position, and other nuances of one of his deceptively simple-looking shots. As it turns out, not that easy at all! So much work clearly goes into the lighting and composition of each image that even capturing their general spirit or essence is far from straightforward – which, when you think about it, is vaguely reassuring.

February 5th: Ladder

The spare room in our new flat has a rather wonderful mezzanine shelf, big enough for a double mattress and a small bookcase. It means we can have guests to stay, but don’t have to fill the floor space with a proper bed – sort of the best of both worlds.

You reach the mezzanine level via what looks like a home-made (or repurposed) wooden ladder. It feels comfortingly solid, and has been painted white to match the walls. There’s nothing fancy about it, which I really like – it’s just simple and basic. It does its job.

This week’s Sinful Sunday theme is minimalism, and when I thought about it this morning I was instinctively drawn to that simple, basic, white ladder. I don’t know why, but I felt like it could do that job too…see whether you agree!

February 2nd: Statue

I don’t yet have much of a plan for the next 27 days, but I do at least know that every Thursday I want to post a re-edited (and hopefully improved!) version of an old Sinful Sunday photo. That’s not just a way to avoid creating original content; we get better at photography (at many things, in fact) by going back and applying a critical eye to our own work – and by the same token, we get to see how far we’ve come, or where we’ve improved, which is always a nice little confidence boost.

I initially picked out a couple of my favourites from 2014: this photo, taken in the bedroom doorway of my flat in Warsaw, and this one from my old boss’ office, taken late at night during my last week at the company. I may still use one or both for future Throwback Thursdays, especially as Molly kindly sent me a kickass edit of the doorway shot; however, when I sat down to have another look at them this morning I decided to go in a different direction.

Sinful Sunday: High Line

January in New York City is a pretty inhospitable month. Cold. Dark. Grey. Wet. And very windy. Hardly sunbathing weather…or is it??

I am British, after all, so when we went for a walk on the (magnificent) High Line – a flagship urban regeneration project, which runs down the West Side from 34th Street to Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District (how appropriate) – I decided that there were definitely advantages to everyone else staying inside…

[Update: you can find more photos from that afternoon here!]

Sinful Sunday: Merry Christmas!

For nearly 200 years, wreaths have been used to celebrate Christmas and welcome visitors to the house during the festive season.

Traditionally those wreaths are candlelit, but modern technology has intervened in recent years to provide a more convenient (and less flammable) form of illumination.

Still, while fairy lights have their own twinkly charm, they lack the plain heft and solidity of a proper Christmas candle. The welcome they give is bright and charming, but also just a little insubstantial. It carries less weight.

Sinful Sunday: Candid

I played hockey yesterday on a pitch that occupied one small corner of a sprawling sports complex, shared with local football and rugby teams. The weather was filthy when we arrived and got steadily worse once the game was underway. The wind whipped across the exposed fields, rain slanted sideways into our faces, and a winter gloom seemed to creep in a little closer with every passing minute.

By the end of the match, I was sore, tired, and ready for the bright and warmth of the opposition’s clubhouse. For pasta bolognese, a pint of beer, and rueful reflection on the defeat we’d just suffered. After some initial uncertainty, I now really like the group of guys I play with, and few things can salve wounded pride better than hearty food and good company.

Even those comforts do little for aching muscles, however. They require scalding hot water – the kind that feels like it might strip the skin from your body – and a proper scrub. After everyone else had left, I went over to the rather austere, chilly shower block and found an empty changing room. Livvy came in with me and took a few photos as I got changed, snapping away until my sweaty kit lay in a messy pile on the floor. I left her sitting on a bench while I waited for the water to heat up, then closed my eyes and let it wash over me.

Sinful Sunday: Shadow Play

This week’s Sinful Sunday prompt was ‘artificial light’, which offered an almost overwhelming array of options for weird, wonderful, and sexy-as-fuck photography (as the other submissions make very clear).

In fact, as I first started to give it some thought earlier this week, I realised that I’ve already played around with a whole bunch of artificial light options over the last couple of years – from all the night-time shots I’ve done, lit by different lamps in different rooms, through to Christmas tree lights, street lamps, and even the fluorescent glow of a London Underground train.

One thing I’d not yet explored? Shadows. So when Livvy suggested projecting my body up onto our bedroom wall, I wasn’t about to say no. When she leaned over me, her freshly-washed hair tumbling down onto my stomach, and her lips grazing the head of my cock, I wasn’t really able to say much at all…
